GENERAL INFO

Chaos Constructions 2004 demo party (CC4) is going to take place on 21st and 22nd of August. Partyplace is in concert hall of Leningrad's Youth Palace (LDM), St.Petersburg, Russia. Approximately 15 minutes by walk from subway stations Petrogradskaya, Chkalovskaya, Chernaya Rechka.

Following competitions and platformes will be present:

PC/Amiga: 16mb Demo, 64k Intro, 4k Intro, Graphics (Rendered, Handdrawn, Freestyle, Ascii), Music (Mod, Multichannel, Mp3);
8 bit: 640kb demo, 4kb Intro, 512b Intro, 640kb game. Additionaly, for ZX Spectrum only: Graphics, AY-music;
Mobile/Handheld: 1mb Demo, 64kb Intro, 1mb Game;
Misc: Animation, Wild demo, Flash 4mb demo;

In case of small number of entries, there's a possibility of combining certain nominations together.

To enter any competiton you will need to register your entry before 15th of August (see "Registration").

Cost of the ticket for 2 days of demoparty - 150 roubles (5 USD). For those who have preordered the tickets earlier - 100 roubles (3.5 USD). Free tickets are available for people from cities other than St. Petersburg (passport necessary for proof), girls and winners of previous Chaos Constructions parties. Please specify this in registration form. Maximum number of free tickets for group (in case group has won the compo and not an individual author) - 3 tickets.

CONSUMPTION OF ANY ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AT PARTYPLACE IS PROHIBITED. INTOXICATED PEOPLE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENTER PARTYPLACE. ALL DAMAGES INCURRED DURING PARTY WILL BE COMPENSATED BY THOSE WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE. IN CASE OF INABILITY TO RETRIEVE THE MONEY OR FIND RESPONSIBLES MONEY WILL BE SUBTRACTED FROM PRIZE FUND. IF VISITOR IS REMOVED BY SECURITY FROM PARTYPLACE, THERE WILL BE NO REFUND.

COMPETITION RULES

- All entries participating in a compo must be previously unreleased.
- Entries previously submitted to other competitions of parties are not allowed.
- If your entry contains somebody elses work, you must have rights to use it.
- All entries must have a representative at partyplace.
- There will be preselection for all competitions by competent jury made of organizers and experts.
- Winners will be awarded. Prize fund is dependent of number of visitors and sponsors.
- All presented entries from competitions will be distributed by organizers of the demoparty via WWW/FTP/CD/DVD.

PC/Amiga compos

* 16mb Demo

- Size of demo must be less or equal 16mb.
- Demo cannot contain animation only.
- Hardware acceleration is allowed (DirectX 9/OpenGL).
- Maximum runtime of one entry - 10 minutes.
- Maximum 2 entries from one author.

* 64k Intro

- Hardware acceleration is allowed (DirectX 9/OpenGL).
- Maximum runtime of one entry - 5 minutes.
- Only 10 entries will be selected.

* 4k Intro

- Hardware acceleration is allowed (DirectX 9/OpenGL).
- Maximum runtime of one entry - 3 minutes.
- Only 10 entries will be selected.

PC demo/intro must work under Windows XP SP1 or Linux. If entry is written for Linux, please notify us in advance and specify EXACT specifications of the system.

PC entries must have an option to output visuals in one of the following resolutions: 800x600, 640x480, 320x240, 320x200.

Amiga demo/intro must work on 040+ or Pegasos machines. You can utilise graphics support through CGX or WARP3D. Entries for PPC are also allowed.

Pegasos demo/intro must work on MorphOS 1.4.2 in either 800x600 or 640x480 resolution.

Demo/intro must be interruptable: on Amiga - LMB or RMB; on PC - ESC.

* Graphics (Rendered)

- Graphics created with rendering software (Lightwave, 3dmax, Cinema, etc).
- Maximum resolution 800x600x24bit.
- Acceptable graphic formats: JPEG, TIFF, GIF, IFF, PNG, HAM.
- You must provide screenshots in different stages of creation (see below).
- Competition entry cannot contain any authors identification.
- Files in archive must be named in following way:
name_xxx.jpg - stages during creation
name_wire.jpg - wireframe view of scene
name_unsig.jpg - unsigned version
name_sig.jpg - signed version
- Only 20 entries.

* Graphics (Handdrawn)

- Graphics created manually on computer.
- Scans or copies are not allowed.
- Maximum resolution 800x600x24bit.
- Acceptable graphic formats: JPEG, TIFF, GIF, IFF, PNG, HAM.
- You must provide screenshots in different stages of creation (see below).
- Competition entry cannot contain any authors identification.
- File structure of archive has to be the same as Rendered Graphics excluding name_wire.
- Only 20 entries.

* Graphics (Freestyle)

- Accepting entries that are done using any methods or techniques or combination of them (Photoshop, rendered, photograph, collage, hand drawn and so on).
- Scanned copies are not allowed.
- Maximum resolution 800x600x24bit.
- Acceptable graphic formats: JPEG, TIFF, GIF, IFF, PNG, HAM.
- You must provide screenshots in different stages of creation (see below).
- Competition entry cannot contain any authors identification.
- File structure of archive has to be the same as Rendered Graphics excluding name_wire.
- Only 20 entries.

* Graphics (Ascii)

- Maximum resolution - 80x60 symbols.
- ANSI colors are allowed.
- Entries will be shown using ACID.
- Only 20 entries.

Graphics will be shown in fullscreen mode. Entries with resolution higher than 800x600 will be scaled down by software. If you want you can provide version for distribution in any resolution and party version of correct dimensions.

Images of erotic/pr0nographic nature will be disqualified during preselection.

It is possible to supply release version in any resolution, but you have to prepare 800x600 party version without any logos and author/group id.

You must supply at least 3 stages for each graphics compo entry.

* Music (Mod)

- Music of oldschool :)
- 4 channels max.
- Size less than 1mb .
- Will be played for 2 minutes only.
- Only 10 entries.

* Multichannel Traditional Music

- Traditional Music is music written in following styles: Easy Listening, pop, blues, pop-jazz, rock-ballad, New Age, retro, classical, oldschool music that we all know from 90s and so on
- Music created in various trackers. Only original entries (no remixes).
- Size less than 4mb.
- Max number of channels - 64.
- Formats allowed - *.XM, *.IT, *.S3M, *.MOD
- No compressed samples.
- Soundtrack cannot be looped and should have an ending.
- You can use 16 bit samples if you wish.
- You can present two versions: compo and release. Release version can contain longer and higher quality samples, more channels and so on. This version will not be played until the end of voting.
- Will be played for 3 minutes only.
- Only 10 entries.

* Multichannel Alternative Music

- Alternative Music is music written in following styles: Trance, Hardcore, Jungle, music that DJs play :) and so on, also styles of rock music such as Heavy/Thrash/Death metal and alike
- Music created in various trackers. Only original entries (no remixes).
- Size less than 4mb.
- Max number of channels - 64.
- Formats allowed - *.XM, *.IT, *.S3M, *.MOD
- No compressed samples.
- Soundtrack cannot be looped and should have an ending.
- You can use 16 bit samples if you wish.
- You can present two versions: compo and release. Release version can contain longer and higher quality samples, more channels and so on. This version will not be played until the end of voting.
- Will be played for 2.5 minutes only.
- Only 10 entries.

* MP3 Song

- Music with lyrics created with various instruments, hardware and software. Only original entries (no remixes).
- Only original entries. Entry for this compo must be a SONG, not music with number of voice samples.
- Foul language, propaganda of sex, violence and drugs are prohibited.
- OGG is allowed.
- 192kbps only. No VBR.
- ID_TAG must be filled in.
- Will be played for 3.5 minutes only.
- Only 10 entries.

* MP3 Instrumental

- Music created with various instruments, hardware and software. Only original entries (no remixes).
- Only original entries. No vocals.
- OGG is allowed.
- 192kbps only. No VBR.
- ID_TAG must be filled in.
- Will be played for 2.5 minutes only.
- Only 15 entries.

Note: entries written solely in programs such as Dance Machine, E-Jay and so on won't be accepted.

8-bit compos

Competitions will take place on machines with 8bit CPUs (or less :) - old computers, calculators and other devices. Only exception from this rule is russian computer BK.

Organizers will only provide ZX Spectrum (see "Compo machines"). Other computers, devices and extentions you have to bring to the party. If device does not have standard audio/video output, image will be taken from the display using digital camera.

* 512b Intro

- Maximum runtime - 1 minute.
- 1 entry from author, 2 entries from group.
- Only 15 entries.

* 4k Intro

- Maximum runtime - 3 minutes.
- 1 entry from author, 2 entries from group.
- Only 10 entries.

* 640k Demo

- Size of demo must be less or equal 640kb.
- Maximum runtime - 10 minutes.
- Only 1 entry from group.
- Only 15 entries.

* 640k Game

- Maximum demonstration time - 5 minutes.
- Only 1 entry from group.
- Author must demonstrate the game.
- Only 10 entries.
- Preferably, game should be original and have english interface.

NOTES AND ADDITIONAL COMPETITIONS FOR ZX SPECTRUM

You are free to use any additional devices or extensions as long as you provide them at the party for demonstration (and if these devices don't contain processors higher than 8-bit).

* ZX Spectrum 512b Intro and 4k Intro

- All intros will be launched from "BestView" without Basic-loader. Do not forget to set correct attributes for screen, border and stack pointers in intro.
- If you are using ROM (routines or data) make sure you are compatible with standard Pentagon 128k.
- Return to Basic after completion.
- Provide Basic-loader for distribution after the party.

* ZX Spectrum 640k Demo

- DD discette, that you can copy and convert to TRD format.
- If your demo is using non standard disk format or specific order of sectors, please notify organizers about it in advance and provide all necessary utilities that allow creation of working disk for demonstration at the party.

* ZX Spectrum Graphics

- Standard screen 6912 bytes.
- One entry from author.
- Only 30 entries.
- Entry must be original.
- Competition entry cannot contain any authors identification. (Release version can contain logos).
- You must provide screenshots in different stages of creation.
- Only handdrawn graphics is accepted, ie drawn on/for spectrum. Preselection is done manually, to resolve any conflicts make sure you have "in progress" versions of your picture to prove authenticity.
- Pictures of erotic/pornographic nature will be disqualified.

* ZX Spectrum AY-Music

- Entry must be original.
- Compiled at #C000.
- Attention, entry has to play correctly from "BestView" or from supplied in advance player.
- Module must have ending (not looped).
- During preselection remixes will be thrown out first.
- Original compositions will have preference.
- In case of limited time, duration of music entries might be reduced (but will not be less than 2 minutes each).
- 2 minutes maximum.
- 1 entry from author.
- Only 15 entries.
- Music will be played on AY-3-8910, in ABC stereo.

Mobile/Handheld competitions

Entries for following devices can participate - PocketPC, Psion, Newton, Palm/CLIE, GameBoy Colour / Advanced, mobile phones and so on except notebooks. Everybody brings their own device - picture will taken from the screen using digital videocamera. Organizers are only providing Nokia 6600, Nokia 3650, Palm Tungsten T3 (see "Compo machines").

* 64k Intro

- Maximum runtime of one entry - 3 minutes.
- One entry from author, two from group.
- Only 10 entries.

* 1mb Demo

- Size of demo must be less or equal 1mb.
- Demo cannot contain animation only.
- Maximum runtime of one entry - 10 minutes.
- One entry from group.
- Only 15 entries.

* Game

- Size of game must be less or equal 1mb.
- One entry from group.
- Preferably, game should have a demo mode without user intervention. Otherwise, author will demonstrates the game.
- Preferably, game should be original and have english interface.
- Maximum demonstration time - 5 minutes.
- Only 10 entries.

Misc competitions

* Animation

- Video can be packed with best quality in MJPEG, AVI or standard VCD (mpeg1) / SVCD (mpeg2).
In case of AVI you have to pack it with videocodec DivX 4.0+ or XVid, audiocodec MP3 (0x55 = MPEG Layer-3). - Entries are accepted only on CD/DVD-R,RW.
- Maximum runtime of one entry - 5 minutes.
- Only 10 entries.

* Flash 4mb demo

- Size of demo must be less or equal 4mb.
- Demo cannot contain only video, animations must be done in flash.
- Maximum runtime of one entry - 4 minutes.
- One entry from group.
- Only 10 entries.

* Wild demo

- You can submit any entry you like in this competition, as long as it is interesting: video and demo on non-standard equipment, anything else (contact organizers).
- If it is video, see animation compo rules.
- Maximum runtime of one entry - 5 minutes.
- Only 10 entries.

COMPO MACHINES

Organizers are providing following compo machines:

PC: Intel P4/2Ghz, 512Mb RAM, Radeon 9800 (for PC/Amiga compos).
Amiga: A1200, 68060/50Mhz + PPC603/240Mhz, 128Mb RAM, video card - BVision (for PC/Amiga compos).
Pegasos: Pegasos I, G3/600MHz, 256MB RAM, Voodoo3 (for PC/Amiga compos).
ZX Spectrum: Standard Pentagon 128k without extensions (for 8bit compos).
Nokia 6600: Java MIDP 2.0, Symbian 7.0s (for Mobile/Handheld compos).
Nokia 3650: Java MIDP 1.0, Symbian 6.0 (for Mobile/Handheld compos).
Palm Tungsten T3 (for Mobile/Handheld compos).

If entries are developed for different hardware (and satisfy competition requirements) it will be necessary to bring all necessary devices with you. Please notify organizers about equipment you'll bring to solve most of possible technical problems before the party.

VOTING

Winners in each competition are determined based on visitor's voting.

Winner of the demoparty is determined by jury and selected from winners of competitions. Jury is formed from organizers and invited experts.

REGISTRATION AND ENTRY SUBMISSION

It is necessary to register if you plan to participate in competitions.

Entries for devices and computers that participants are bringing with them to the party can be submitted (with the devices) before beginning of first day of party.

Registration and acceptance of other entries will be finished one week before demoparty - in the evening of 15th of August. As an exception, your entry might be accepted after 15th of August, but it is not guaranteed.

Complete information about competitors and entries will help us evaluate and plan timeframes of competitions.

CHANGELOG

11/02/2004: initial translation.
27/02/2004: max. size in 8 bit game compo changed from 32kb to 640kb, AVI codec requirements in Animation compo added, OGG in MP3 compo allowed.
14/07/2004: rules are updated in accordance with russian version. brief: music compos expanded, gfx rules updated, organizers added, timetable updated, flash demo compo rules corrected, deadlines are more detailed, warning about copyrights added, place of party finalized, cost of tickets adjusted.
19/07/2004: due to availability of Pegasos, we are now allowing Pegasos entries in combined PC/Amiga compos.
27/07/2004: revised timetable, small changes in organisers.
